A drunken-driving crash turned Matt Maher into a mentor.

Convicted in 2009 for causing the death of a Pennsylvania man, the former soccer player is compelled to talk about it. He’s spoken at 34 schools about what he’s done, spreading the cautionary tale to anyone who is even thinking about drinking and driving.

Prisoners often find redemption in warning youngsters not to follow their paths. Maher feels humility and shame for what he’s done. But he did take a man’s life and is now serving a 5½-year prison term.
