“It’s sort of unfortunate we’re here building a new prison to deal with the prison population,” state Sen. Jake Corman, R-Benner Township, said during a ground-breaking ceremony attended by about 30 other state and local leaders Tuesday.

“But at the same time, not only will we have the construction jobs here in central Pennsylvania, which will help our economy; But then after it’s completed, there will be good family-sustaining jobs to be had here as well — which when we’re in a recession as we are, jobs are a way out of it. ... So we’re glad to be here as part of it.”

The $176 million, 2,000-bed prison will be on the same property as the 97- year-old State Correctional Institution at Rockview, which houses about 2,100 inmates.
