PA County Prison Reviewed By State

The state Department of Corrections will begin its investigation into the operations of Lackawanna County Prison on Tuesday, state and local officials said.

The board that oversees the county prison voted unanimously to ask the state to step in after a Wednesday briefing on a brutal Aug. 8 assault that sent protective-custody inmate Nicholas Pinto to Community Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

Inmate Michael Simonson, who should not have had contact with protective-custody inmates, has been charged with attempted criminal homicide after he allegedly attacked Mr. Pinto, punching and kicking him, and stomping on his head at least 15 times.

Mr. Simonson, along with co-defendant Elvis Riccardi, was in prison on charges of criminal homicide in the alleged kidnapping, robbing and killing a 34-year-old musician in Shickshinny. He had been housed in Lackawanna County Prison because his co-defendant was at Luzerne County Prison. Mr. Simonson has since been returned to Luzerne County Prison, said Lackawanna County Warden Janine Donate.
