Angelique Barnett woke up Thursday morning with a feeling of accomplishment, but she acknowledged that she still has a way to go. "I reached part of my goal, but I still need to finish my degree," said the 48-year-old jail inmate. While in jail, Barnett, of Tulsa, has spent the last seven months cramming for two years' worth of computer and hospitality classes. The vocational training paid off Thursday evening when she and nine other women graduated in the third class of Project Reconnect, a Girl Scouts Beyond Bars program offering such training as welding, hospitality and computer courses to incarcerated mothers. The yearlong re-entry program is sponsored by the George Kaiser Family Foundation and aims to successfully reunite the women with their children. Read More. |
