KINGMAN — An Arizona legislator from Kingman will hold a public meeting next week to discuss the escape last month of three inmates from a Kingman private prison.

State Rep. Doris Goodale, R-Kingman, will host a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Black Mountain School on Highway 68 in Golden Valley. State Department of Corrections Director Charles Ryan and his staff will be on hand to discuss the prison escape and the classification system used to identify inmates.

An inmate sentenced to death is classified to be housed in a maximum facility. However, an inmate sentenced to life in prison for murder can be sent to a medium facility after he or she serves at least two years at a maximum facility. An inmate sentenced to life, sentenced to more than five years in prison or with a felony sex conviction cannot be sentenced lower than a medium facility.

In recent years, DOC officials added medium-security beds at the privately run Kingman prison, which initially housed minimum-level inmates. The prison is operated by Utah-based Management and Training Corporation.

The three inmates, with the help of an accomplice, escaped from the Kingman prison July 30, leading law enforcement officers on a nationwide manhunt. Three of the fugitives allegedly murdered an Oklahoma couple in New Mexico.

Just a good thing Dora's not still there. She'd be sending them pizza and beer!
