MILWAUKEE - It was a fire that lit up the night sky at 73rd and Capitol --- but this burning building was a parole office. And the concern is that critical information on ex-cons may have gone up in smoke. So corrections officials spent most of Tuesday, trying to keep track of offenders. "We've been able to follow up today on people who have been released from incarceration, people who are in custody, we're investigating violations," said Mary Jane Anttila, Assistant Regional Chief with Community Corrections. It can take years to put together one paper trail on an offender, and the fear is that some of that information was lost in the fire. The 28 probation officers and support staff who worked on Capitol Drive have been transferred to a Department of Corrections office on Port Washington Road. Today, they were in crisis mode --- going over records that are stored electronically, and making leaving messages for parolees who are required to check in regularly. Read More. |
