| Problems Need Fixing For Early Release |

Eight months after an early prisoner release program blew up in the face of Gov. Pat Quinn, he and his administration are ignoring invitations to appear before a Republican-led investigation of the program. The Quinn administration might try to dismiss the efforts of the Illinois Joint Investigatory Panel on Early Release as a partisan effort — even though some Democratic lawmakers attended its first hearing in Peoria. But it cannot as easily dismiss the findings of a panel appointed by Quinn himself to look into the awarding of “meritorious good time.” The report issued by retired Judge David Erickson labeled the so-called MGT Push program “ill-conceived” and said the Department of Corrections “exhibited institutional myopia: while pursuing cost-saving measure, it neglected the most important consideration — the potential impact on public safety.” Read More. |
