| Body Searches Under Fire At Woman's Prison |

Prisoners at the Denver Women's Correctional Facility are upset over a new body-cavity search policy that requires them to show more of their genitalia to guards. The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado wrote a letter sent Monday to Colorado Department of Corrections director Ari Zavaras demanding he stop the practice. "Forcing prisoners at DCWF to hold open their (genitalia) for inspection, in the absence of any reason to suspect contraband, inflicts needless suffering and undermines rehabilitation," the letter says. "DOC should abandon the new policy." Katherine Sanguinetti, spokeswoman for the DOC, confirmed that Zavaras received the ACLU's letter but declined to comment on the contents until further review. Cavity searches are routinely conducted in jails and prisons because guards need to stop the flow of drugs and weapons. The Denver women's prison holds 900 women. Read More. |
