MADISON (WKOW) -- A new Wisconsin Department of Corrections program that covers the cost of driver's licenses and state identification cards for prison inmates is drawing criticism from a candidate for lieutenant governor. Rep. Brett Davis (R-Oregon) said using public funds to cover these fees is wasteful during a time of reduced state revenues and recession. "People are losing their jobs, law abiding citizens looking for work right now, they're all playing by the rules and their tax dollars are going for prisoners to get state identification cards and driver's licenses." Davis said faith groups and non-profit groups are sources of help for inmates, and taxpayers should not be burdened with the cost of issuing driver's licenses.
