An Indianapolis man accused in two Madison County (Ind.) slayings and three area rapes swallowed a handcuff key in the Hamilton County Jail last week, authorities said. After Frederick M. Baer, 32, arrived at the Hamilton County Jail last Monday from Marion County, he sneaked into a small office near the book-in area, authorities say videotape shows. After going into the office, Baer -- who was in Hamilton County for a court hearing -- took a key from a drawer in the office and swallowed it, authorities said. Later, an X-ray of Baer showed a small key in his intestinal tract, and officials waited for him to pass it. But by the time they took another X-ray last Thursday, the key was not visible, according to Sheriff Doug Carter. So they assumed that he passed it and put it somewhere in his cell. A broken key was found during a search of his cell. Parts of the key were behind a steel wall plate and in the drain of the cell's toilet, according to Carter. Safety at the jail was not jeopardized during the incident, said Maj. Mark Bowen, of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department. No one has been disciplined, Bowen said, but officials were still investigating last Friday. Baer is being held in an isolated cell at the jail in Noblesville. |
