The two candidates for Sauk County Sheriff that currently serve in the department both said Wednesday they believe Sheriff Randy Stammen's request for a 6.9 percent increase in next year's budget is too high. The three candidates for the position took questions from the media and public during a debate Wednesday night at the Rock Springs Community Center. Much of the discussion centered on the proposed budget. Sgt. Bill Steinhorst of rural Baraboo and Chief Deputy Chip Meister of Reedsburg, who will face off in the Sept. 14 Republican primary, said the 2011 budget recently proposed by retiring Republican Sheriff Randy Stammen is not justified.
