| Ex-prison guard guilty of smuggling pills |

A former guard faces one to five years in prison after a jury convicted him of smuggling painkillers into the Madison Correctional Institution near London. Brian E. Hinkley, 27, of Washington Court House, was found guilty of illegal conveyance of drugs at the conclusion of a one-day jury trial on Wednesday. Authorities found five Vicodin pills hidden on Hinkley during a “surprise shakedown” of staff members as they entered the prison for work on Nov. 18, said prisons spokeswoman Julie Walburn. Hinkley immediately resigned. Madison County Common Pleas Judge Robert D. Nichols ordered Hinkley taken into custody pending sentencing, which a court official said is expected in October.
