Despite state funding cuts to Arizona's public education, schools in the Gila Valley started the school term with ample supplies, thanks to the efforts of employees and inmates of the Arizona State Prison-Safford. Boxes of school supplies were delivered to school districts in Graham County and Willcox on Aug. 19. The items included pens, pencils, crayons, markers, highlighters, hand sanitizer, glue sticks and paper. "We spent (more than) $10,000 on this stuff," said Sgt. Ruben Encinas, a corrections officer who headed up this year's Pack to School drive. Read More. |
