TX County Begins Work On New Prison

Work is now under way on a new private prison expected to bring about 300 jobs to Baldwin County.

State and local officials and The GEO Group broke ground Monday afternoon in tthe new prison at Laying Farm Road.

The state Department of Corrections awarded a contract to the company earlier this year.

The $80 million prison is expected to open sometime in 2012.

The state says the new jobs will include 176 correctional officer positions. But the prison's employees will not be state employees.

The jobs are welcome in Baldwin County, where four state prisons and youth centers have closed in the past few years, costing hundreds of jobs.
