A former lieutenant with the Alton Fire Department indicted in Belknap County on eight counts of arson and one count of attempted arson is claiming his arrest was illegal and that his alleged confession should be kept from a jury.

Stark T. Liedtke, 43, of 254 Dudley Road, Alton, was initially charged with five felony counts of arson and misdemeanor charges of prowling/loitering and criminal trespass — actions that led to his arrest the evening of March 31 when he allegedly attempted to start another fire.

During questioning by authorities, Liedtke allegedly admitted to starting 11 fires since 2006, including several building fires in Alton and New Durham and several forest fires in Alton. Local authorities believe Liedtke's motive in setting the fires was the excitement of being able to fight them.

Public Defender John Bresaw who is representing Liedtke has filed a motion to suppress evidence arguing police interrogated his client for nearly four hours about various suspected arsons, during which Liedtke made incriminating statements.
