The Arizona Department of Corrections and Rio Salado College are partners in a new program allowing inmates to help build homes for Habitat for Humanity of the West Valley. In the Prison Partnership, male inmates at Lewis Prison south of Buckeye are constructing kitchen cabinets and exterior walls that are hauled to the construction site. Female inmates at Perryville Prison in Goodyear work three days a week at the construction site, where they learn a variety of skills, including laying tile and carpet, shingling roofs, and installing plumbing, wiring, doors and windows. The new partnership is expected to create two new Habitat homes annually. Rio Salado College contracts with the Corrections Department to provide education and training to about 60 inmates in an entry-level program. Upon their release from prison, qualified inmates may interview with the Arizona Builders Alliance to meet with contractors and enter the trades. |
