A Leesville man has been sentenced to six years of hard labor for burning 179 acres of timberland in 2008, authorities reported.

Darrell W. Westmoreland, 66, of 3755 Camp Baker Road, Leesville, was convicted Feb. 11 on charges of simple arson, according to a press release. Westmoreland had been charged with setting three different forest fires in the Camp Baker area, destroying more than $80,000 worth of timberland.

Judge Vernon B. Clark of the 30th Judicial District Court ordered the sentence of six years in a Department of Corrections prison as a result, but suspended the sentence if Westmoreland serves one year in Vernon Parish and pays restitution of $20,825, a $1,000 fine and court costs. Westmoreland was also placed under three years supervised probation.
