| Guam DepCor Faces Lawsuits From Prisoners |

Guam - At least seven inmates intend to file a lawsuit against the Department of Corrections after a decision was made today to stop all work types of details. The agency's director pulled the inmates from various details after meeting with the Attorney General's Office this morning. "Public Law 19-06 specifically deals with identifying categories with prisoners or inmates that fall in those types programs, those who do and don't, so having said that Director Palacios has advised that he will comply," noted Bryan Cruz, spokesperson for the attorney general. Earlier this week Acting Attorney General John Weisenberger advised DepCor that they were violating the law by allowing convicted murderers to work off the prison. The law states that such inmates are not eligible for educational or work release outside of the prison compound. While the AG's Office was prepared to take the issue to court to force compliance with the law, the tables have turned as DepCor Director J.B. Palacios confirms several inmates are planning to sue the agency. Read More. |
