COLUMBIA - The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has begun erecting signs in work zones where non-violent offender inmates from the S.C. Department of Corrections (SCDC) minimum security facilities are performing maintenance on the state's highways. Inmates are working with SCDOT maintenance units in 12 different counties where SCDC facilities are nearby. On any given day, as many as 85 inmates could be working to pick up litter, mow and trim vegetations and perform clean-up jobs at SCDOT maintenance facilities. Each inmate is paid $15 per day. These services assist the SCDOT with highway maintenance and clean-up activities and save taxpayers money, officials said. It also frees up other SCDOT employees employees to respond to maintenance needs. The inmate labor program saves taxpayers more than $1 million a year. Read More. |
