The Department of Corrections is continuing to temporarily relocate some prisoners from the Canterbury region to reduce the risk and pressure placed on emergency services and local authorities. "It is likely that all 135 prisoners from Christchurch Women's will have been transferred to Auckland Women's by the end of tomorrow, and around half of the approximate 800 prisoners from Christchurch Men's will have been relocated by then also. Prisons have sufficient staffing levels and cell capacity to accommodate prisoners from outside the region, and we are planning for some of the male prisoners to be accommodated in North Island prisons," says Acting Manager Service Support Lance Alexander. "The relocation of prisoners is temporary, due to a risk that the site infrastructure may not function properly during an emergency. This scenario could divert emergency services from working in other areas of the community, and place staff, the community and prisoners at risk. Once we have some certainty about the water pressure we will move prisoners back to Christchurch." Read More. |
