Over Capacity, and Out of Compliance.....that's what the Minnesota Department of corrections is saying about the Martin County Jail.The violations have already affected how the jail operates and now the jail faces being downgraded.News 12's Caroline Rowland joins us live in the newsroom with more on this story.Caroline.Lisa. The jail already can not house female inmates, maximum security inmates or juveniles. And now they are facing being downgraded from a yearlong facility to a 90-day lockup, if the facility isn't brought up to the state's codes.County commissioners say they're willing to make the necessary changes....but as of now building a new jail is out of the question. Mark Geerdes has been running the Martin County Jail for seven years.Mark Geerdes, Jail Administrator says, "We're over capacity, there are a lot of physical plant concerns that are hard to address within the confines of the jail. The rec area is too small." there's not a lot for the inmates to do."The jail was built in 1974 with the life expectancy of 25 years.And 36 years later it's out of compliance on nine different requirements...many that have been cited in previous inspections.
