Home For Felons Shot Down By Locals

St. Croix County (WQOW) – Residents in Roberts are protesting a facility that would make convicted felons their new neighbors.

A transitional house for non-violent offenders has been given the green light by the Town of Warren. However, hundreds of residents in nearby Roberts want their voices heard as well.

The purpose of a transitional house is to prepare convicted felons to reenter society. But for a number of residents in the Village of Roberts, it is just too close for comfort.

"I think their location is in the wrong place. I believe in second chances, but having it right behind a residential neighborhood, and about a mile from the school is just not the right place for it," says Casey Bland, a resident of Roberts.

Bland runs a home daycare just a block away from the proposed transition home. She says her village was never consulted about it, but that does not mean the Department of Corrections messed up. The transition home is actually in Warren, which has signed off on the home. Still, more than 270 residents in Roberts have signed a petition protesting the facility. Bland says their concerns were never heard.

My question to those concerned residents is, "who among you are already living in your community while on felony supervision"?
