MUSKEGON COUNTY — Phillip Paige Bishop, the longtime girls gymnastics coach convicted of sexually fondling a 10-year-old student, got almost the toughest sentence he could: a minimum of nearly three years in prison. Muskegon County 14th Circuit Judge Timothy G. Hicks on Tuesday ordered Bishop, 51, of Spring Lake Township to the Michigan Department of Corrections for between 35 months and 15 years for second-degree criminal sexual conduct. The 15-year maximum is set by law; the 35-month minimum was the judge’s decision. State sentencing guidelines called for a minimum of no more than 38 months. Even before making that judgment, Hicks ruled mostly for the prosecution on a series of disputed sentencing issues, resulting in the guidelines he used to craft Bishop’s tough sentence. Read More. |
