| CO DOC Accepting Responsibility For Escape |

STERLING — The investigation into how Douglas Alward was able to escape from Sterling Correctional Facility last month is in the beginning stages, said Department of Corrections Executive Director Ari Zavaras Tuesday. But he said at the community meeting held last night at Northeastern Junior College that he wanted to assure the public that the DOC shares their concerns. The safety of the public is their top priority, Zavaras said, followed closely by staff safety, as well as inmate safety. “We let you all down,” he said. “Bottom line is, we do work for you all. (Sara Waite/Journal-Advocate)make was that the electrified “kill fence” was turned on and working properly the night of the escape, despite rumors to the contrary. “This individual figured out a way to defeat that fence,” he said. While he didn’t go into specifics of how Alward got past the perimeter, “If one thing had slipped, we wouldn’t be here tonight,” he said.
