Duval County’s unique partnership with the state regarding state prisoner re-entry back to the commuity probably won’t stay unique for long. Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Walter McNeil would like to have three more such arrangements. Palm Beach County looks like the next county in line with Hillsborough County and Leon County among other future possibilities. The state directs most of the Duval offenders headed back to Duval through a retooled Baker County prison. Offenders go there from six months to three years before their release. The idea is to give inmates on that trek some custom training and counseling before they get out and then have the Jackonville Re-entry Center work with them to find housing, jobs and other services once they return.
