Disgraced former Keys schools administrator Monique Acevedo has formally entered Florida's prison system. Tuesday night, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office took Acevedo, 42, to the South Florida Reception Center in Doral. From there, she was likely transferred to the Broward Correctional Institute in Fort Lauderdale, where females are transitioned into the prison system. Acevedo is beginning an eight-year stretch on four counts of grand theft and two of fraud for stealing $413,012.43 from the School District when she was its adult education coordinator. She quit her job in March 2009 when financial irregularities in the district came to light. She pleaded guilty on Aug. 31 and asked for leniency from Circuit Court Judge Mark Jones. Her public defender wanted house arrest; prosecutors asked for a 10-year sentence. Prison will be followed by 22 years of probation. She also has to pay full restitution. Read More. |
