The Koreatown Northgate neighborhood along Telegraph Avenue north of downtown Oakland is home to an increasing number of restaurants and the hip Art Murmur, which lures throngs to local art galleries and bars on the first Friday of the month. So the news that a San Rafael nonprofit intends to open a day center for state parolees in the middle of the district didn't quite jibe with the neighborhood's vision of itself as a beacon of revitalization. "The neighborhood is getting better," said Osman Othman, owner of Oasis Market, a Middle Eastern grocery store, butcher and bakery. "These are previous criminals. Everybody would be scared." But the nonprofit says the center, which would be paid for with state money, will ultimately reduce crime in the neighborhood and elsewhere in Oakland. The center will give parolees training and skills to find jobs and housing, the group says, and only those who are actively interested in improving their lives will be allowed in. Read More. |
