| CO Community Shaken Over Escape |

STERLING — Department of Corrections are not releasing specific details about the escape of Sterling Correctional Facility inmate Douglas Alward at this time due to concerns about jeopardizing the criminal case against Alward, DOC Executive Director Ari Zavaras said Tuesday. However, during a community meeting in the Northeastern Junior College ballroom, he did provide certain information that they had learned during their debriefing of the captured fugitive. As reported earlier, Zavaras said Alward identified a 5-minute window during which he could escape. The inmate was last seen at SCF shortly after 9 p.m. Aug. 22, and was reported missing after an emergency count was called at 10:10 p.m. that night. He also confirmed that A local resident raises the issue of a lack of notification about the escape for campers at the Prewitt Reservoir. Zavaras also said that Alward told investigators that he was aware that residents of northeast Colorado are typically well-armed and able to defend themselves, and so he planned to avoid populated areas as much as possible.
