(Concord, N.H.) New Hampshire Department of Corrections (DOC) Commissioner William L. Wrenn announced a new Veterans re-entry partnership with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The two agencies signed a Memorandum of Understanding that outlines procedures for providing continued aftercare services for inmates that are being released from prison. Under the agreement, the DOC will furnish the VA with the names of offenders who are scheduled to be released in six months. The VA will then meet with the offender and identify appropriate referrals for housing, substance abuse, employment, medical, and mental health services. Commissioner Wrenn said, “This is a significant step forward in providing assistance to a segment of the prison population and we are optimistic that this will lead to a more successful re-entry for these offenders.” The agreement will remain in effect permanently. The two agencies will meet annually to discuss the progress of the program. There are 270 inmates incarcerated in the state prison system who report that they are veterans. |
