Marion County Prosecuting Attorney Brent Yager said it’s about holding parents legally and morally responsible for their children. “If you’re going to have kids, be responsible and provide for your children,” he said. “It’s just the right thing to do.” Since starting to prosecute them, he has heard all kinds of excuses for nonpayment, usually ending in an argument against prison time because they won’t be able to pay if they’re incarcerated. “If we’re filing a felony against you, we’ve pretty much exhausted every other avenue.
