DEDHAM, MA, Sept. 15, 2010 – Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti is pleased to announce that the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office was one of only 13 county correctional agencies in the entire country to receive a U.S. Department of Justice local demonstration grant designed to stop inmates from committing crimes again after their release from jail. The $335,000 grant will be used to augment and enhance Sheriff Bellotti’s existing Repeat Offender Re-entry Initiative, through which inmates are notified that they face significantly harsher penalties if they reoffend. At the same time, the initiative links inmates with transitional housing and job resources and substance abuse treatment centers prior to their release so that they are more likely to avoid their prior pitfalls when they leave jail. The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, which participates in Sheriff Bellotti’s re-entry program, has hailed the initiative as “a model for the entire state.” “Virtually all of our inmates return to their communities, so it is imperative that we do all we can to keep our neighborhoods safer by working to make sure these inmates don’t commit new crimes,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “It’s a win for the community, and it helps transform a convicted criminal into a productive and positive member of society.”The U.S Attorney General’s Office notified Sheriff Bellotti that his grant proposal was approved last week. “We will continue to think outside the box to find alternative resources for these important initiatives,” Sheriff Bellotti said. The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office was the only county correctional agency in New England to receive the Second Chance Act Prisoner Reentry Initiative grant. |
