Indianapolis, Indiana (September 14, 2010)—This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV), so to show support for this organization, the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) made a significant donation. IDOC Commissioner Edwin G. Buss was on hand at the ICADV’s 30th Anniversary Gala to present a donation of $10,950 to the organization. Various IDOC staff members, and facility programs, such as the Wee Ones Nursery, the Purposeful Living Units Serve (PLUS), and the offender American Legion helped raise money for this important cause. Some of the IDOC’s private partners also chipped in for the donation. “The ICADV has provided victims of domestic violence with important services for thirty years. I am pleased to make this donation on behalf of the IDOC and its partners to show how much we recognize and support their efforts for this important public safety issue,” said Commissioner Buss. The IDOC donation will go to the Economic Justice Project, a fund to aid victims who need help paying for transportation to emergency shelters and resources, relocation to a safe environment, and to reunite victims with their support system. In addition, the fund can be used to help survivors pay down debt, re-establish credit, pay uninsured medical costs, security deposits, and first month's rents. Prior to the IDOC donation the Economic Justice Project funds, which are distributed to victims throughout the state of Indiana had been depleted, according to the ICADV’s executive director, Laura Berry. “The Economic Justice Project funds help victims redevelop security and self sufficiency,” Berry said. “We greatly appreciate this donation and the funds will be utilized to directly benefit victims of domestic violence.” The Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence was founded in 1980 to work toward the elimination of domestic against all persons in our state. As Indiana’s statewide coalition, ICADV is an inclusive network which both supports its member programs, and educates the public at large, through trainings, resources and advocacy. This year, ICADV is celebrating 30 years of empowering Indiana’s communities to work on the elimination of domestic violence. |
