County Making Money Off Tribal Inmates

Isabella County netted more than $200,000 housing inmates from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe in the past year.

Tribal members facing charges in either Tribal or federal court fall under the same category as renters from Wayne County and are charged for stays in the jail.

Tribal members facing state charges in Isabella County Trial Court are not charged for their time in jail, but the Tribe has to pay rental fees for those facing charges outside state court, Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said.

Sheriffs are required to house inmates facing state charges, Lt. Tom Recker said.
