A captain with the Kent County (Mich.) Sheriff's Department tells News 8 that an inmate used the ID of another prisoner about to be released to walk out of jail in his place. Theodore Lee Lawton was originally convicted of a 1996 armed robbery. He and another Kent County Jail inmate look alike. That inmate was scheduled for release yesterday, but it was Lawton who used the inmate's ID badge to walk out of jail around 8:00 Tuesday morning. Officials discovered the escape in the early afternoon. Now, the search is on for Lawton. The Sheriff's Department is still holding the prisoner who was scheduled to be released until they can determine if he was involved in the escape plan or if Lawton stole his identification. News 8 will continue to bring you the latest on the search for Theodore Lawton, throughout the day. |
