FORT SMITH, Ark. -- State budget cuts and growing prison populations have many county jails in Arkansas over capacity. On Tuesday, representatives from the governor's office met with local sheriff's and county leaders in Fort Smith to discuss their frustrations and solutions. The Sebastian County jail is currently about 50 inmates over capacity. Sebastian County Chief Deputy Tommie Young said at any given time there's about 100 prisoners inside the jail who've been convicted and are waiting to be transported to state facilities. Young said that can't happen though, because state facilities too are overcrowded. Read More. |
