| Corrections Academy Opens in Palmer |

JUNEAU – The Department of Corrections will formally open its first dedicated Training Academy, located at the Palmer State Office Building (515 East Dahlia), at 10 am Thursday, Sept. 23. The DOC Training Academy will be responsible for training new Correctional Officers and Probation/Parole Officers, and for continuing education for Prisoner Transportation Officers and staff Department wide. In addition the Academy conducts in-service and specialized training, including Firearm Instructors and Defensive Tactics Instructors for DOC employees as well as APSC certified officers. The training facility will be available for use by other local, state and federal agencies in cooperation with the department. Commissioner Joe Schmidt will offer brief opening comments. Ribbon-cutting will be at 11:30 am.
