| County Jail Looses Contract, Budget In Question |

YORKVILLE - Despite the Racine County Jail losing a contract with the Department of Corrections this year, jail administrators do not estimate a large budget shortfall and say new contracts are in the works. In March, the DOC notified Racine County it planned to end a contract to house state inmates at the jail due to health care concerns. Last month the county's Public Protection and Justice Committee met to discuss concerns about the lost contract and asked the sheriff's department to get back to the committee on what to do about a projected budget shortfall. Initial estimates from the county finance director indicated the jail's budget shortfall could be $710,000, but it will be significantly less than that, said Chief Deputy John Hanrahan of the Racine County Sheriff's Department. He went before the county's public protection committee Wednesday to answer their questions from the previous meeting. Because of fewer inmates, the jail has saved approximately $300,000 by not having to hire five correctional officers, Hanrahan said. Read More. |
