Four weeks after acquitting a former Cook County (Ill.) Jail officer of having sex with inmates there, a judge on Wednesday threw out the case against one of his co-defendants. Judge Vincent Gaughan dismissed the case against former officer James Anthony III, 28, after the state had presented evidence against him. On June 1 Gaughan found Kenneth Swearnigen not guilty in a bench trial, saying the witnesses were not credible. The men were accused in August, along with Iyare Egonmwan, of trading food, cash and makeup with inmates for sexual favors. Egonmwan is to be tried next month. Prosecutors could not be reached for comment on whether they will proceed with that case. |
