Sauk County law enforcement officials are in discussions with employee unions to determine who will be laid off as the county closes a unit of its jail. "Basically we've had several meetings with them to try to come to a consensus," Sauk County Jail Administrator Capt. Michael Hafemann said during Tuesday night's meeting of the Sauk County Board. The board voted to hire the additional staff necessary to open jail Unit A in 2008 with the idea of making the extra beds available for other agencies to rent. But the board voted to close the unit in July, citing uncertainties about the prospects for generating adequate revenue. The process for laying off jail Unit A employees is not specifically laid out in the union's contract, Hafemann said, adding that senior employees who were moved to day shifts when the jail unit opened will have to be moved back to their former positions.
