PHOENIX — The Arizona Supreme Court on Wednesday scheduled an Oct. 26 lethal injection for what would be the state’s first execution since 2007, but a senior prosecutor said he was not “overly optimistic” that the necessary drugs could be obtained by then. Jeffrey Landrigan was sentenced to death for the 1989 stabbing and strangulation of Phoenix resident Chester Dyer. The killing occurred a month after Landrigan escaped from an Oklahoma prison where he was incarcerated for a 1982 murder and a 1986 prison stabbing. Arizona’s high court issued an execution warrant for Landrigan one day after the justices granted the state’s request. The defense had requested a delay because of reported shortages of at least one of the three drugs that Arizona uses for injections. Kent Cattani, the state’s top death penalty lawyer, said Wednesday the department doesn’t have sodium thiopental, a barbiturate general anesthetic that causes unconsciousness. Read More. |
