Stop soda When you are regularly drinking soda the best that you can hope for is for: Obesity, Tooth Decay, Caffeine Dependence, and Weakened bones.

Even if you don't love your health, you must at least like your money. The Finance section of AOL had a story titled, "10 Bad Habits and What They Cost You."

According to the article, if you drink just one soda a day you're spending an estimated $1.50 day, or $547.50 a year in soda before tax. A three soda a day habit will run you up to $1,642.50 a year. What will you get for your money?
  • For every soda that you drink you decrease your body's oxygen requirements by up 25%.
  • The dramatic increase in either phosphorus or citric acid from that soda will also lower your body's pH levels leaching calcium from your teeth and bones.
  • Phosphoric acid also neutralizes the hydrochloric acid in your stomach which can interfere with digestion.
  • The caffeine and sugar in the soda also helps to dehydrate your body while depleting your mineral reserves.
  • Sugar raises your insulin levels, which can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, premature aging among other things.
  • Sugar also lowers your immune function you reducing the ability of white blood cells to destroy bacteria by up to 50% for up to five hours. (http://herbalwhirled.wordpress.com/2006/11/25/just-24-ounces-of-soda-can-shock-the-immune-system/)
  • A study by Sharon P. Fowler, MPH, and colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio found that there was a 41% increase in risk of being overweight for every can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day. The conclusion diet soda makes you fatter! (http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20050613/drink-more-diet-soda-gain-more-weight)
  • For the past ten years studies have been showing us that artificial sweeteners can: stimulate your appetite, increase carbohydrate cravings, and stimulate fat storage and weight gain. (http://www.thrivingnow.com/for/Health/diet-sodas-may-double-your-risk-of-obesity/)
  • For those of you watching your weight, artificial sweeteners are dangerous excitotoxins. Aspartame has over 92 different health side effects including: brain tumors, birth defects, diabetes, emotional disorders and epilepsy/seizures (http://www.oleda.com/oleda_tips/tips.asp?dept=48).
  • Did you know that when aspartame is stored for a long time or kept in a warm place it begins to change chemically to a methanol. Methanol is an alcohol that converts to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these chemicals are carcinogens (http://www.oleda.com/oleda_tips/tips.asp?dept=48).

Did you know that Splenda breaks down into dichlorofructose, a chemical similar to chlorinated pesticides. Some of the adverse affects seen in research include: shrunken thymus glands, enlarged liver and kidneys, atrophy of lymph follicles in the spleen and thymus, increased cecal weight, reduced growth rate, decreased red blood cell count, hyperplasia of the pelvis, aborted pregnancy, decreased fetal body weights and placental weights, increased glycosylation of hemoglobin for diabetics (http://www.holisticmed.com/splenda/research-adverse.html).

Water is good for thirst. If you don't like the taste of water or never have, try flavoring water with a little liquid Stevia. Stevia is an herb, is safe, and has been used for thousands of years by humans as a sweetener. It has no known side effects.

If you simply can't drink water try juicing at home. The most natural form of hydration that you will ever find is locked inside the cells of fruits and vegetables. Dilute your juices with water if you have to in order to get yourself accustomed to drinking more water.

Another good way into tricking yourself into greater consumption is through the use of aromatics like lemon, lime, ginger, orange, mint, cranberry, clove, cinnamon, lavender, and vanilla. Humans respond to smells very easily. If your water smells nice you'll be more enticed to drink more.

Drinking sufficient water is important because your body is composed of 70% water. Your muscles tissue contains 75% water. Your blood contains 83% water, body fat contains 25% water, and your bones about 22% water. Knowing this it is important to state that over 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. The thirst sensation is easily lost or can misinterpreted as a hunger signal. Becuase of this, monitoring your hydration needs based on thirst is a very bad idea.

If you can't remember to drink enough water through your day schedule it into your day. Make deals with yourself to have a bottle of water drunk before lunch, another before you leave work, and a third before dinner. You'll be surprised how much better you feel and how much more efficiently your body works when you're properly hydrated.
