Inmates uprising quelled at jail

Jail inmates barricaded cell doors, threw debris and slickened floors with soap and water before a sheriff's tactical team regained control of the cellblock about two hours later.
One inmate was punched and an El Paso County (Colo.) sheriff's deputy was slightly hurt in the melee Tuesday, but neither injury was serious, authorities said.
The instigators were two men awaiting trial in fatal shootings, sheriff's Lt. Clif Northam said.
He identified them as Bernard Gilligan, 26, and Tyler LePage, 24, who were housed with about 28 other inmates in the county's high-security jail unit.
Gilligan and LePage claimed they had kidnapped the others in the cell, but about half of them were willing participants, Northam said.
The uprising started at about 9:30 a.m. Inmates pushed temporary bunks against the cell doors and tied bed sheets around the bars to prevent deputies from opening the doors.
The tactical team told inmates who wanted to cooperate to move to one side of the cell. Deputies then cut open the cell doors, went inside and subdued the other inmates.
Gilligan will be charged with kidnapping, obstruction of peace officers and third-degree assault. LePage faces similar charges, plus as second-degree assault on a peace officer.
