Longview Goodwill has been a productive member of this community going on 33 years now — a good deal more productive than many residents may have imagined. It is, as Mayor Kurt Anagnostou observed when Goodwill moved to its current 15th Avenue address a few years ago, much more than a thrift store. That point was well illustrated in Brenda Blevins McCorkle's recent coverage of a local awards luncheon highlighting Goodwill's job re-entry program for ex-offenders. It's doubtful that anyone has taken on a greater challenge in this flat economy than has Jerry Hastings, who was honored at the Sept. 14 luncheon as Goodwill's Achiever of the Year for his work as job developer with the offender re-entry program. And no one has given Hastings more help in meeting that challenge than Annie Chen, owner of the New Moon Chinese restaurant in Longview. Chen was named Goodwill's Community Partner of the Year at the awards luncheon. Longview Goodwill's offender re-entry program is recognized as one of the more successful programs aimed at helping offenders transition from prison into productive jobs or helping ex-offenders find work. The local program was the subject of a lengthy 2009 article by the state Department of Corrections communications office. "It's like taking a big mound of clay and molding it into a new creation," Hastings said of challenge in the 2009 article.
