Inmates from the north cellblock of the Limestone County (Ala.) Jail were handcuffed to a fence on jail grounds Thursday evening after starting a fire on the north block of the jail. Sheriff Mike Blakely said that Wednesday night, when inmates were given razors to shave, that deputies did not collect the same number of razors that had been issued. As a result, inmates were "racked down," meaning privileges were taken away. Deputies also confiscated other contraband, including pieces of metal, plastic and parts of tattoo guns that could potentially be used as weapons, the sheriff said. On Thursday, Blakely said that inmates were possibly trying to "make a statement" when they threw their lunch of Sloppy Joes and Kool-Aid onto the floor, which made for a sticky mess. For the time being, inmates will only be served two meals each day -- two cheese sandwiches with water. The sheriff said he was unsure of how long food for the inmates would be limited to cheese sandwiches. Because the jail is a smoking facility, the inmates would have been able to start the fire with matches or lighters, but the new jail which inmates will move into soon, will be a non-smoking facility, Blakely said. There were 23 inmates in the north cellblock. Suspects will likely be charged with arson, Blakely said. |
