Former Monterey Police Chief Tim Murphy plead guilty last week of Official Misconduct and Theft of over $10,000 before Criminal Court Judge David Patterson. The charges were brought into court “by information,” bypassing an indictment or presentment before a grand jury. Pleading guilty to official conduct has a sentencing range of between one to six years and up to a $3,000 fine. The Theft Over $10,000 has a three to 15 years sentence and up to $10,000 in fines. A sentencing date has been set for Dec. 14 at the Putnam County Justice Center. The offenses took place between June, 2007 and November, 2009. Judge Patterson went through a list of questions to make sure Murphy understood his guilty plea to the charges. He told Murphy that, as a convicted felon, he could no longer possess a gun, vote or hold office. Judge Patterson told him that it would be difficult to obtain a job.By waving his rights, Murphy was also told that he could not appeal the charges, only the sentence he would be given at a later date. The guilty pleas stem from an audit done by the state comptroller’s office and a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation investigation requested by District Attorney Randy York. Read More. |
