A Marengo County (Ala.) man charged in a June 17 double slaying should have been in a federal prison at the time the killings occurred, authorities said. Charlie Bennett and a Stanley Leon Maiten, who robbed a bank together two years ago, were released from a state prison May 1 instead of being turned over to deputy U.S. marshals to begin their federal sentences, said Brian Corbett, a spokesman with the Alabama Department of Corrections. Now Bennett, 21, faces two counts of capital murder in an attack that happened within weeks of his release. And Maiten -- who is not a suspect in the murders but, like Bennett, has a lengthy federal prison sentence hanging over him -- remained a fugitive as of late Thursday. Corbett said his agency was never told about the federal sentences. "It sounds like a mistake was made," he said. "Now, where it happened -- that's the question." Bennett was being held without bond Thursday at the Perry County Jail in connection with the shooting deaths of Lawrence Smith and Kenneth Dixie, whose bodies were found in a car on a patch of Perry County farmland, according to District Attorney Ed Greene. The three knew each other, Greene said, and Smith had been robbed. On Monday, a federal judge in Mobile issued a warrant for Maiten's arrest. Deputy marshals and local law enforcement in Marengo, Hale and Perry counties are looking for him, Copeland said. Maiten, he said, is about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs about 175 pounds. Maiten is black with brown eyes, has a scar over his left eye and goes by the street name "Shine," Copeland said. Maiten could be dangerous, Copeland said, and anyone with information as to his whereabouts is asked to call the Marshals Service in Mobile at 690-2841. |
