ALTUS, Okla. (AP) - The Altus City Council has approved a contract with the state Department of Corrections to bring male inmates to a work center in the city. The male inmates will replace female inmates who were removed from the center in August. Prison officials have said the females were moved to save money and because of numerous investigations into alleged policy violations and inappropriate relationships involving inmates who worked on city crews. The council approved the new contract Monday that also provides for the male inmates to work on city crews. Altus Mayor T.L. Gramling told the Lawton Constitution that the free inmate labor saves the city about $1.3 million. Read More. |
