Sex Offender Found Working In Hospital

A registered sex offender is providing maintenance for Jasper General Hospital and a nursing home next to it.

But there is no Mississippi law that prevents him or any other registered sex offender from working at a hospital or nursing home - as long he does not provide "direct patient care." Those that do provide such care must give their fingerprints and submit to a criminal background check.

"We feel like we have a good law on the books, but this is obviously an area where the law is a little soft," said House Public Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Steve Holland. "We don't want sex offenders around vulnerable adults or children."
