| Judge Orders Rehab Rather Than Jail Time |

MOUNT PLEASANT — A state Appeals Court has backed an Isabella County judge’s decision to order rehabilitation services instead of prison for a man charged with assaulting his girlfriend. Isabella County Prosecutors appealed the sentenced handed down to Levi J. Doolittle, a 24-year-old man who allegedly beat and choked his live-in girlfriend Aug. 31, 2008. As part of a plea agreement, Doolittle agreed not to contest one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, court records show. In exchange, prosecutors dismissed additional charges and recommended sentencing be capped at 27 months in prison, court records show. A pre-sentence report set the sentencing range between 19 and 38 months at the minimum, records show. The judge, however, ordered Doolittle to serve five years of probation and one year in jail, with credit for 256 days served. Read More. |
