BLUFFDALE -- The Utah Department of Corrections is requesting more money to help solve a problem. The department says it is almost out of room for male inmates at the Utah State Prison. The department says it expected to run into this issue by the end of the year, but the prison population is growing faster than predicted at a rate of 10 to 15 inmates per month. Nearly all the prison's beds for male prisoners are full. The department's short-term solution involves a jail contract program. The prison's contract with 21 counties allows it to send a certain number of inmates to those jails and pay for each inmate. Currently the prison is capped at just over 1,200 inmates it can outsource. But it has asked the Legislature to allow it to go up to 1,400. Read More. |
